Needed: One volunteer with a pick-up for the morning of May 24th.

Our Sawyer, Devin, has some wood ready for us to pick up at his property in Rocky Point and transport to the storage shed at Neil’s. This will require two trucks and Dany has one so we’re looking for one more member with a truck available on May 24th to help out. Please contact Dany at woodrecovery@viwg.com if you can help out.

Steam Bending WorkShop with Mike Randall – Sat June 21st

Greetings Guild Members,
We are moving forward with the Steam Bending WorkShop with Mike Randall on Saturday June 21st. For those not familiar with Mike he is a Red Seal endorsed designer-maker who is proudly based in Victoria, British Columbia. A master of wood-bending, Mike combines complex traditional craft with contemporary and minimalist forms, resulting in refined pieces that spark wonder and joy in both residential homes and commercial spaces.

Mike did a presentation on bent lamination at our April meeting and this workshop will allow for a deeper dive into steam bending. The tentative format would be:

– Discuss wood types, moisture content, grain run out, equipment (including strapping, pulleys etc.).
– Discuss Steam box construction and materials required plus alternatives that work and don’t work!!
– Demo some bends in white oak and yellow cedar (both using straps and forms as well as free bending (yellow cedar) for sculptural work.
– Set up a hot pipe rig and let people experiment with bending thin strips.

Workshop Details:
Date: Saturday, June 21st
Time: 10:00 am ~ 12:00?
Location: Camosun College Fine Furniture Program WorkShop
Cost: $25 for Guild Members (This is to cover materials and to also help subsidize the cost for Camosun students to attend)

Please RSVP to workshops@viwg.com ASAP as we do need to confirm the number of attendees.
